Dwight L. Moody, one of the most influential evangelists of the 19th century, profoundly impacted the Christian world through his preaching, teaching, and tireless ministry efforts. Despite being born into poverty in rural Massachusetts in 1837 and dropping out of school at 13, Moody’s life was transformed by his faith. At 17, he was led to Christ by his faithful Sunday school teacher, Edward Kimball. Moody initially aimed to become a wealthy businessman but soon found a greater purpose in spreading the Gospel, starting a Sunday school in Chicago’s poorest, most crime-ridden area.

Moody’s impact grew as he held great crusades, passionately preaching the Gospel. His bad grammar, reflecting his limited formal education, did not hinder him from filling great halls with tens of thousands of people night after night. The secret to his influence lay in his total consecration to God.

While in England, evangelist Henry Varley said, “The world has yet to see what God can do through a man who is totally yielded to Him.” Moody was captivated by these words and resolved, “By the Grace of God, I will be that man!”
